A convicted smuggler from Eloy has been sentenced to 115 months in federal prison.

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Phoenix said 27-year-old Juan Pablo Moreno-Gonzalez was sentenced Monday by U.S. District Judge G. Murray Snow.

Moreno-Gonzalez pleaded guilty to Conspiracy to Transport Illegal Aliens
for his role in a smuggling attempt in October 2008 during which four Guatemalan citizens drowned while trying to cross an irrigation canal.
Moreno-Gonzalez admitted he was transporting the aliens for financial gain.

At the time of the incident, Moreno-Gonzalez was on pretrial release from U.S. District Court
in Tucson on a September 2008 charge of assault on a federal officer.

Moreno-Gonzalez is set for trial on the assault charge in Tucson federal court on March 9.
