HOUSTON — The employer of a Mexican man accused of fatally shooting a Houston police officer has been arrested and charged with harboring an illegal immigrant, federal officials announced Wednesday.

Robert Lane Camp, 47, the owner of a landscaping company, has been charged with encouraging Juan Leonardo Quintero-Perez, the accused killer of Houston police officer Rodney Johnson, to unlawfully enter the United States and with harboring him.

Camp, who was arrested Wednesday, was set to make his first appearance in federal court later in the day.

Each of the offenses Camp is accused of committing in a criminal complaint carry up to five years in prison and a fine up to $250,000.

"This prosecution demonstrates the consequences a U.S. citizen faces when he or she decides to harbor or assist an undocumented alien to enter the United States and to employ that alien unlawfully," U. S. Attorney Don DeGabrielle said in a statement. "The shooting of HPD Officer Johnson was a tragic incident that could have been avoided."

Jury selection in Quintero-Perez's capital murder trial is set for March 31. He faces a possible death sentence if convicted.

Quintero-Perez, a Mexican national, is accused of shooting Johnson four times in the head as the officer sat in his patrol car's front seat during a routine traffic stop. Police said Johnson, 40, was shot after Quintero-Perez pulled a gun from his waistband as he sat handcuffed in the back of the patrol car.

Johnson apparently missed the gun when he patted down Quintero, authorities said.

When Quintero-Perez was pulled over by Johnson, he was driving a company truck owned by Camp, authorities said.

According to a criminal complaint, Quintero-Perez was charged with the state felony offense of indecency with a child in 1998.

Camp allegedly posted his $10,000 bond and hired a defense attorney for him.

Quintero-Perez was deported in 1999 after being convicted. But later that year, he returned to the county illegally, with Camp buying him a plane ticket from Phoenix to Houston, according to the criminal complaint.

Authorities, in the complaint, also allege that Quintero-Perez returned to work for Camp, who bought him a home that the illegal immigrant and his wife, Theresa Quintero, rented.

Theresa Quintero told authorities that Camp falsely listed her and not her husband as an employee of his landscaping company, according to the complaint.

After the shooting, Camp told Houston police that Quintero-Perez was one of his employees, but when questioned later by immigration authorities he denied the illegal immigrant ever worked for him, according to the complaint.

"Officer Rodney Johnson's terrible murder illustrates that hiring and harboring of illegal aliens is not a victimless crime," said Robert Rutt, special agent in charge of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Office of Investigations in Houston.

This is the first time I have seen this done, a criminal conviction of an
employer in a federal court will send a very loud and clear message.

I am all for sending a loud and clear message. My question is: "How are we going to continue paying for all of this?!"

A question that needs to be asked at every arrest.....

Every single time an illegal alien is arrested for a crime, police should be asking who their employer is and then also providing that information directly to ICE and ICE needs to take action. I'm so happy that this happened in this case. There are hundreds of thousands more just like it....

Every employer and every "advocacy" agency that assists an illegal in coming here, residing here, or working here or a combination of any of those, should be prosecuted.

I hope the police officer's family goes after him in civil court and gets every nickel he ever made.

ITA. US citizen victims of illegals knowingly hired by an employer should be able to sue them for all they are worth. Those who become victims of illegal that have been deported at least once prior to commiting a crime against an American should be able to sue the US government. Maybe then they will do something to secure or borders and our lives.

    Wouldn't that be nice, Whatmattersmost.

We need to find some attorneys to do the work for us.

Of course, really I'm not sure you need an attorney just some people who know how to file papers and do research.

Maybe we could become our own lawyers - prison inmates do it.

A Texas employer is facing federal charges for allegedly helping an illegal immigrant return to the United States after he was deported, an illegal who now is accused in the fatal shooting of a police officer, according to a published report.

Juan Leonardo Quintero-Perez is accused of shooting and killing Houston policeman Rodney Johnson and jury selection in the capital murder trial is scheduled March 31. He could be sentenced to death if convicted, according to a report by the Associated Press.

"Every single time an illegal alien is arrested for a crime, police should be asking who their employer is and then also providing that information directly to ICE and ICE needs to take action," said "MyAmerica," on a forum run by Americans for Legal Immigration PAC.

"I'm so happy that this happened in this case. There are hundreds of thousands more just like it…"

The illegal alien allegedly shot Johnson repeatedly in the head as the policeman sat in his patrol car during a September 2006 traffic stop. Quintero-Perez allegedly pulled a gun from his waistband as he sat, in handcuffs, in the back seat of the patrolman's car.

    (Story continues below)

Now landscape company owner Robert Lane Camp, 47, has been named in a federal complaint alleging he encouraged Quintero-Perez to return to the United States and harbored him once he was in the country.

Camp was arrested Wednesday and was scheduled to be freed on a $50,000 unsecured bond, the report said. His lawyer declined comment.

"This prosecution demonstrates the consequences a U.S. citizen faces when he or she decides to harbor or assist an undocumented alien to enter the United States and to employ that alien unlawfully," said a statement released by U.S. Attorney Don DeGabrielle.

"The shooting of HPD Officer Johnson was a tragic incident that could have been avoided," he said.

According to investigators, Johnson apparently missed the weapon when he handcuffed Quintero-Perez and put him in the back of the patrol car. Authorities said when Johnson stopped Quintero-Perez, the illegal alien was driving a company truck owned by Camp.

The report said the illegal alien's earlier court case involved claims of felony indecency with a child in 1998, when Camp allegedly posted a $10,000 bond and hired a defense lawyer. Quintero-Perez was deported in 1999 after his conviction.

But the criminal complaint in the new case said Camp reportedly bought a plane ticket from Phoenix to Houston for Quintero-Perez after he returned to the U.S., again illegally.

The complaint said Quintero-Perez's wife, Theresa Quintero, a U.S. citizen, reported Camp listed her, not her husband, as an employee.

"Officer Rodney Johnson's terrible murder illustrates that hiring and harboring of illegal aliens is not a victimless crime," Immigration Officer Robert Rutt told the AP.

"This is the first time I have seen this done," added jimpasz on the ALIPAC forum site, "a criminal conviction of an employer in a federal court will send a very load (sic) and clear message."
