STARR COUNTY - The Mexican military stepped up its patrols along the Rio Grande. The extra enforcement has U.S. authorities on alert.

We are still piecing together all of the details. Border Patrol now says they were working with the Mexican authorities.

On Tuesday morning, U.S. Border Patrol agents caught several people crossing into the United States. They thought it was drug runners trying to get away. Turns out, the military spooked some illegal immigrants who were crossing.

Agents say they stopped the illegal immigrants. The immigrants were unarmed and wearing life vests.

We're told the Mexican military is patrolling the area closely. They work with Border Patrol to help catch anyone trying to cross into the states to get away.

“This is a perfect example where both agencies work together and share information. Perhaps the Mexican authorities had some information or intelligence they were working on or following up on and so together they were able to communicate with each other and disrupt the illegal activity that was going on,â€
