Even Trump reportedly thinks Stephen Miller can be too extreme on immigration

    • President Donald Trump's senior policy adviser, Stephen Miller, is sometimes too extreme even for Trump, Politico reported Wednesday.
    • Though Trump largely agrees with Miller's hard-line immigration stance, he has begun seeking out other people's opinions, a former White House official told Politico.
    • Trump was even reportedly disappointed that Miller hadn't foreseen the public backlash to the administration's recent family separations.

    Stephen Miller
, the most well-known hardline immigration staffer in the White House, is reportedly sometimes too extreme even for President Donald Trump.

The senior policy adviser has seized control over much of the Trump administration's immigration agenda by coaxing or bullying career staff members, and placing his allies strategically across multiple government agencies, according to a new profile of Miller in Politicothat cites nearly a dozen current and former US officials.

One former White House official even told Politico that even though Trump largely agrees with Miller's positions, he has grown increasingly aware of Miller's blind spots when it comes to immigration policies — particularly their optics — and has begun seeking out other opinions.

"Trump will sometimes say, 'Well, yeah, but you're so tough on this stuff, Stephen," the former official said.

Trump was even disappointed that Miller, who was one of the architects of the administration's "zero tolerance" policy, hadn't anticipated the massive backlash to the family separations, according to Politico.

The public's reaction was so strong that Trump eventually signed an executive order ending the separations, and a federal judge ordered the administration to reunite the more than 2,600 children who were taken from their parents.

"Even the president realizes the Miller is so far on one end of the spectrum that sometimes he has political blind spots," the former official told Politico.

Miller has become the face of major immigration-related debacles like the chaotic rollout of Trump's original travel ban and the family separations — and the public has gradually become more aware of his role, to the extent that people have heckled him in public and his own uncle scolded him in a Politico op-ed.

"Acting for so long in the theater of right-wing politics, Stephen and Trump may have become numb to the resultant human tragedy and blind to the hypocrisy of their policy decisions," David Glosser wrote, calling his nephew an "immigration hypocrite" whose policies would likely have prevented his own ancestors from coming to the US.

"Trump and my nephew both know their immigrant and refugee roots. Yet they repeat the insults and false accusations of earlier generations against these refugees to make them seem less human."

Miller previously worked for Attorney General Jeff Sessions when he was in the Senate, and joined Trump's 2016 presidential campaign in part because of Trump's immigration views.

Trump only worries about backlash from the left, not from the right.

Trump needs to worry less about "optics" controlled by the soclialist media and more about keeping all the promises he is breaking by backing Amnesty deals for illegal aliens.

If this article is accurate, Trump is ad odds with all of the illegal immigration hardliners that got him elected.
