US Customs hiring at Vt. border posts

US Customs hiring at Vt. border posts

    AP / August 10, 2013

ST. ALBANS, Vt. (AP) — U.S. Customs and Border Protection is looking for Vermonters who would like to work at ports of entry along the Vermont-Quebec frontier.

CBP spokeswoman Shelbe Benson-Fuller said Friday that the need for workers is greater in Vermont than in other parts of the country because there have been more retirements, transfers or promotions and the agency — part of the Department of Homeland Security — has not been able to find sufficient replacements.

The agency is seeking applicants from across the country, but is hoping to find Vermonters who would like to apply.

‘‘This is an opportunity for people who want to live in Vermont and stay in Vermont,’’ Benson-Fuller said.

She did not know how many openings the agency is trying to fill.

The positions are full-time and require regular qualification and the carrying of a firearm. They include paid training at the CBP’s Field Operations Academy in Brunswick, Ga.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens, under the age of 37, have a valid driver’s license and pass a medical examination, fitness tests, and drug test as well as a thorough background investigation. There’s a high probability applicants will be subject to a polygraph examination.

Among the qualifications, applicants should have a four-year college degree in any subject or law enforcement experience, CBP’s Northeast Recruiter Brian Levitre said.

A new CBP employee in Vermont would make just over $31,000 a year in one of these positions and about $69,000 annually within four years.

Maine seeks customs and border patrol officers

A U.S. Customs and Border Patrol spokeswoman says it can be challenging to fill Maine positions because officers often seek work in larger ports.

    The Associated Press

JACKMAN — U.S. Customs and Border Protection is on the lookout for young, healthy and fit Maine residents in need of a job.

CBP officers are hosting several recruiting events this month, beginning Friday at the Stratton library and continuing at the Carrabassett Valley library and the Skowhegan Career Center next week. They're also holding an open house at Jackman and Coburn Gore ports of entry the week of Aug. 19

Officers work to ensure terrorists don't enter the U.S., inspect travelers and enforce customs, immigration and agriculture laws. Applicants must pass fitness and medical exams and have to be under the age of 37 at the time they're referred for selection.
