BOSTON — A former federal immigration officer has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to having sex with an 11-year-old boy in Brazil last year and bringing photos of the act back to the U.S.

The U.S. Attorney’s office announced Monday that 44-year-old Michael Clifford was sentenced by U.S. District Judge William Young, who also ordered Clifford to pay nearly $28,000 in restitution to the victim for counseling.

Federal prosecutors said Clifford went to Rio de Janeiro while on official duty as an Immigration and Customs Enforcement deportation officer.

Officials said he picked up the boy at an outside cafe late at night, took him back to a hotel for sex and took pictures. Hotel security footage showed Clifford entering with the boy and sending him out the next morning.

Clifford pleaded guilty in June.
