And with good reason.......what possible sanctions could Mexico place upon us anyway?

For sanctions to be effective, the imposing country has to actually have something we want and need, something to offer.

Mexico doesn't quite fit the bill.........
We buy electricity, oil, and natural gas from Mexico.

Trade
The United States was the destination for about 80% of Mexico’s exports in 2009. Top Mexican exports to the U.S. include petroleum, cars, and electronic equipment.

That may be true but the broader point is that we don't need Mexico. For anything.

This country has other options....for both self sufficiency and importing of goods. Many more options than Mexico has for exporting of goods and services or even developing any meaningful level of self sufficiency at this point in time when valuable time and resources are being utilized in the war against the cartels.

If that were not the case, Mexico wouldn't be so desperate to hang on to the billions of dollars in remittances flowing in as the second largest source of revenue next to oil......and due to replace oil in the top spot in the not so distant future.

That 80% figure might be impressive if it could stand on it's own but it can't. Not when it's reliant on a quickly dwindling source of oil and US interests outsourcing which is an arrangement that they can't count on lasting with the current state of the global economy.
