Eyes are on Rockland following a tragic crime and unruly aftermath.

When Mary Nagle of Rockland died a violent, random and so tragic death three weeks ago, it unleashed a torrent of sympathy, anger and xenophobia that continues to wash through the region. The sympathy hardly requires explanation: No life should end under the circumstances that claimed the beloved mother, wife and neighbor.

The anger is as easily understood: Her accused killer apparently was in the country illegally, giving license for some to decry the vulgarities of U.S. immigration enforcement and, apparently, fate. Harder to explain, or stomach, has been the xenophobia â€â€
