Border Sheriffs Share Ideas In San Diego

Border Sheriffs Share Ideas In San Diego
    Gene Cubbison, NBC 7/39 Reporter

    UPDATED: 1:13 pm PDT May 7, 2007

SAN DIEGO -- Their southernmost county lines run a total of 2,000 miles along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Their jails are often crowded with inmates who came into the United States from Mexico illegally, fueling crime statistics and costs for law enforcement and incarcertion.

Now, 26 sheriffs from California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas are meeting in San Diego to share ideas on how to interact with each other, federal and state agencies in efforts against border area crime and potential terrorist threats.

Another common denominator: They all -- and always -- could use more money. But from where they ride patrol, "Uncle Sam" hasn't been a very generous relative -- reimbursing the states and counties for only a small fraction of costs that stem from the national problem of illegal immigration.

"That's one of the battles we're fighting," says Yuma, Ariz., County Sheriff Ralph Ogden, whose deputies cover 85 miles of border. "If we spend a dollar, we should get a dollar back. We shouldn't be getting pennies on the dollar."

So mutual aid is frequently the order of the day. Says Hudspeth, Texas, County Sheriff Arvin West: "We've gotten to where we send officers up and down the Texas border, because they're getting overrun."

The sheriffs say crime stemming from illegal immigrants begins most dangerously with the rampant drug traffic that victimizes citizens and public officials in Mexico.

"The cartels are running the country," San Diego County Sheriff Bill Kolender told his counterparts and their deputies attending The Southwest Border Sheriffs' Coalition gathering at Old Town's Hacienda Hotel.

"They've killed police officers in Tijuana and people at all levels, and it's extremely problematic for us."

San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders, who served as chief of police for six years during his 26-year career with SDPD, told the group that while their efforts are paramount, "It's going to be a political solution that solves this. We're not going to stop people who want a better life from coming over here."

Of course the spineless, PC driven mayor Sanders, the former police chief of San Diego fails to mention that he does and has always supported the idea of S.D. being an undeclared "sanctuary" city, virtually never reporting arrested criminal aliens to the Feds. He also fails to mention that he was/is a big supporter of the so-called "community policing" method of law enforcement, which is still in effect, where cops never ask the immigration status of any person arrested, even for violent felonies.

As far as trying to "stop people who want a better life from coming over here", they have never even attempted it. Heck, we have hundreds, if not thousands of Mexican National children who cross the border everyday to attend U.S. schools at taxpayer expense and they do nothing. We have thousands of illegal alien women who cross the border every month with the sole purpose of giving birth on U.S. soil and they do nothing. If the local authorities can't stop children and barefoot, nine months pregnant women from crossing over, how can they expect to stop hardened criminal felons, gang bangers and drug cartel members?

It is a well known fact that high level drug cartel leaders live in the finest neighborhoods of San Diego ands the cops do nothing, they leave it all up to the Feds. We have huge and sophisticated car theft rings that operate within the County, stealing thousands of cars a month from San Diego residents and take them into Mexico for stripping, dismantling and resale and they do nothing.

Local San Diego politicians and law enforcement may talk a good game, but it is so blatantly transparent that they hardly ever lift a finger to stop the rampant crime, drug smuggling/distribution cartels, the prostitution rings, the exotic bird, reptile, puppy mills and even child smuggling rings from operating with total impunity in the area along the San Diego/ Mexico border. Then again it sure helps when the local news media refuses to expose or even acknowlegde the existence of many of these extensive criminal operations.

San Diego has no Sheriff Joe Arpaio, not even close, hell, we would even settle for a Barney Fife. What we have had is a collection of gutless Keystone Cops, operating like ostriches with their heads buried in the sand, refusing to halt, slow or even recognize the dangers to the poublic that the endless flow of criminals that constantly prey upon the tourists and residents that visit or make San Diego home. To even document that San Diego has a problem with Mexico based criminal operations would require them to take some kind of action, so they just refuse to acknowledge it even exists.

    Greetings from Mexico's Finest City.

    This is why I left.
Calderon was absolutely right when he said...."Where there is a Mexican, there is Mexico".

    Well said reptile.

    I share your frustration.

That last paragraph jumped out at me too.

It's the money, as usual. This is a tourist city with zillions of hotels and restaurants that use illegals, we all know that.

Reminds me that while attending a rally downtown for Ramos and Compean a hotel worker yelled down to us "Viva La Mexico" and "La Raza."

Come to think of it, are we the only tourist town on the border? Hmmm...
