FAIR Statement: The Tragedy of the Immigration Bill

FAIR Statement: The Tragedy of the Immigration Bill

WASHINGTON, June 26 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Federation for American Immigration Reform issued the following statement in the wake of the Senate vote 64-35 to allow debate on the so-called "immigration reform" bill that would proceed to an antidemocratic procedure for considering a limited number of amendments:

"This bill is a sham. In stark contrast to the efforts made in the mid-1980s, the bill currently pending before the Senate is not even a pretense of an effort to actually reform U.S. immigration law and policy. The Bush Administration, determined to deliver an amnesty and virtual tidal wave of future foreign labor, argues that the 1986 law did not work, and therefore apparently believes we need to compound these mistakes with a series of ludicrous and absurd measures that will do little to reduce immigration or enhance its enforceability. Most egregiously, the Senate bill fails utterly to increase the level of risk for those employers who are most determined to use immigration to reduce labor cost.

"This proposal -- if enacted -- will totally and utterly destroy the integrity of US immigration system for a generation. It will alter irrevocably what it means for our children and grandchildren to live in America. It reflects a total disconnect between the immigration enthusiasts in Congress and its impact on the average American community.

"Amidst the mad flurry of jockeying by special interests dominating the current Senate immigration debate one thing is clear: the Senate has no interest in assessing the true significance of mass immigration on American communities. No effort is being made to explore how adding tens of millions of people will affect every aspect of American society, from traffic congestion, schools, education and the environment. No effort is being made to better align immigration flows with our true economic needs, and no effort is being made to ensure our immigration policy corresponds to our full range of domestic priorities as a nation.

"We will continue to work against this ill-conceived amnesty proposal and encourage millions of Americans to do likewise."
