From the far side:Anti-Immigrant Racism in the U.S. Growing

Commentary: Anti-Immigrant Racism in the U.S. Growing

    By Carlos Montes

Los Angeles, CA - The day laborers gathered in the early morning, looking for work at the southern California Home Depot. They gazed with amazement and curiosity at the loud crowds gathered to either condemn them or support them - all in the name of justice and democracy.

This scene is repeating itself across the U.S. Racists groups like the Minutemen and Save Our State are targeting undocumented Mexican and Latino immigrants. Fortunately, these racist gangs are running into opposition. On Jan. 7, many of the 'Stop the Invasion' demonstrations, backed by Save our State and other racists, were overwhelmed by immigrants rights counter-protests.

    Discrimination, racism on rise

These immigrant workers have done nothing to deserve this kind of treatment. They are working to improve their own lives and to provide for their families' lives. The Minutemen and other racist right-wing groupings within the Republican Party and the capitalist class consistently lie - they say immigrants are terrorists and blame them for the deteriorating living conditions in the U.S. In fact it is the rich, who rule the U.S., who are pulling down the standard of living and they are the ones who are terrorizing people across the globe.

The abuse, discrimination and racist attacks have escalated. A Mexican youth died after been shot in the back by U.S. Border Patrol in early January. The Minutemen hold demonstrations and there is more racist legislation in Congress. One recently passed bill makes it a felony to be undocumented in the U.S., denies U.S. citizenship to children born of undocumented parents in the U.S. and calls for building a wall on the Mexico-California border. We already have hundreds of Mexican and Latino workers who die crossing the dangerous border.

The U.S. economic and political policies, such as the trade agreement NAFTA, have contributed to an economic crisis in Mexico and other countries in Central and Latin America. The U.S. economic penetration of these countries’ economies has caused unemployment and business bankruptcies, forcing millions of workers to flee looking for work to survive. They come to the U.S. seeking work, but find exploitation at the hands of U.S. corporations who need and want low-cost labor to feed their profits.

Call for action, unity of progressive forces

Many community and labor groups have responded in defense of the undocumented workers. Immigrant rights groups, community groups, Mexican/Chicano organizations and unions are planning to organize protests, pressure congress to rescind the racist legislation and organize the immigrant workers. This is a great opportunity to build unity and action of all these groups to stop these current attacks and halt this racist legislation.

We should build a community-labor alliance to strengthen and expand the fight for equal rights and democracy for all immigrants. We must fight for real reform of the current immigration laws. We must fight for the right of all workers to be able to work for a decent wage with the right to organize unions and full residency regardless of immigration status.

We need to get the military recruiters out of our schools and communities. Latino immigrant youth are also targeted by military recruiters to fight in unjust foreign wars, so we see the rise of green card soldiers.

Full freedom, equality and liberation for all working people, including immigrants, will only be accomplished with the defeat of monopoly capitalism, the system that has built an empire of misery. We can see the outlines of the final defeat of U.S. imperialism on the horizon in the heroic struggles of the people of the world who fighting for self-determination and an end to exploitation. We can see it in the growing independence of Latin American nations like Venezuela and Cuba - examples of the possibilities for humankind.

    Where?

A Mexican youth died after been shot in the back by U.S. Border Patrol in early January.
This "youth" was a human trafficker with multiple arrests and was throwing rocks at the Border Patrol. I'm still waiting to see the autopsy report to substantiate that he was shot in the back.

He wants army recruiters out of schools? He wants, he wants, he wants...well we want him gone.

He should go back home and dictate his wants to his leaders....if he's such an activist, he needs to reform his home land...not ours!
Do not vote for Party this year, vote for America and American workers!

He wants full freedom, equality..blah blah blah...they already have that in their own country.

Mexican is a nationality, just as American and Canadian are...there's no racism about it. We just want them to go back HOME and raise hell like they're doing here. Take care of their own country rather than trying to change ours to suit THEM.

All they want is: EVERYTHING...free of charge, please.
