Romley calls for gov to veto SB1070by Jim Cross/KTAR (April 22nd, 2010 @ 10:54am) Policy >> Comments:107 PHOENIX -- Maricopa County Attorney Rick Romley urged the governor Thursday to veto an immigration bill awaiting her action and send it back to lawmakers for more work.
Romley said SB1070, as passed by the Legislature, is tearing the state apart. He also said he has significant legal concerns about the bill.
Romley made the call in his first news conference since he was appointed to succeed Andrew Thomas, a staunch supporter of the bill who stepped down to run for state attorney general this fall.
Romley is a Republican, like Gov. Jan Brewer and the legislative majority which passed the bill that would require Arizona law enforcement officers to ask people they stop for documentation they are in Arizona legally. The bill makes being in Arizona a crime in itself.
Romley's call for a veto came as the governor's office said her mail and calls were running about 6-to-1 against SB1070.
"Send that bill back to the Legislature to rework many provisions of that bill," said Romley. "Call a special session, and I will be offering the assistance of this office in redrafting that bill."
He added, "I do believe legislation is appropriate. But, it must be the right legislation, done the right way. This bill is tearing our community apart."
SB1070 is an unfunded mandate with major legal issues, Romley said, adding that he fears rising tensions could present a danger to law enforcement officers statewide.
"I think we're going to have a tremendous amount of litigation, there's potential abuses," Romley said.
"We could have somebody out there in custody that could be legally here. Those are significant civil rights. I'm concerned about this bill from a legal per se."
Romley said, however, that if the bill becomes law, he must enforce it.
Brewer has until Saturday to sign the bill, veto it or let it become law without her signature.
Brewer's spokesman, Paul Senseman, said Thursday morning that the governor's office has received 1,990 contacts in favor of SB1070 and 13,000 urging Brewer to veto the measure.
Those numbers do not include postcards and petitions, Senseman said.
In Tolleson, more than 100 high school students ditched classes Thursday to protest the immigration bill. The organizer said he felt it was important the students' voices were heard, even though they cannot vote.
Republicans in the Legislature passed the measure, saying that illegal immigration is out of control and the federal government has failed its responsibilities to enforce immigration law.
Democrats and immigrants' rights groups have mounted an effort to convince Brewer to veto the bill. They claim it is unconstitutional and promotes racial profiling.
The Arizona Civil Liberties Union and others have vowed court challenges to the measure if it becomes law.

If they let the illegals win this one, they may well raise the Mexican flag at the capitol.

Romley is what is wrong with America, Republican or not. This type of cowardice displayed against the people of Arizona in favor of illegal aliens just speaks volumes as why this election cycle, Republicans must be diligent and vigilant to select candidates with no yellow streak down their back.
Saving a nation or a state in the deplorable condition ours is in will not be easy. It will take straight-forward Americans who see the problems and a clear and legal venue to correct and solve them. Russell Pearce and every single member of the Arizona legislature who voted for this bill expressed that when they approved this bill. When someone who is too stupid to know the difference between actual legal dissent and contrived illegal opposition through the advocates of illegal immigration as well as illegal aliens themselves, is not someone who should be in public office.
I also hope Governor Brewer displays the good sense to sign this bill and move it forward.

All of the illegals and their Congressional representatives, , their special interests, need to find an area that they can all live together, work together, shop together, educate together, whine together, law break together, speak Spanish together, march together. They can fight each other for jobs, for wages, for whatever. They need to leave the rest of us alone, to be Americans, and to speak English.
John 14:27
It is written,...Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.Matthew 19:26
But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.
