What began as a daily routine turned as a nightmare for Jennifer Serrano, who said that on Oct. 6 she was allegedly stopped by four unmarked federal vehicles, arrested and pressured to leave the country within 60 days, together with her husband, due to their immigration status.
Serrano, 35, said she was stopped by officers from the U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) agency while driving her daughters Jennifer, 17, and Whitney, 15, to school, as she has done for years.
Once incarcerated in a local detention center, Serrano, a native of Acapulco, Guerrero, Mexico, was allegedly given the opportunity to stay in the country for two months with the promise of turning her undocumented husband Alejandro Serrano, 40, to authorities — a decision that meant putting aside dreams and leaving a place she has called home for almost 20 years.
