    Farmingville illegal migrant camps closed
Brookhaven Town executives say the two sites set in the woods were being used by migrant day laborers

Brookhaven Town officials said Tuesday they have shut down two illegal camps set up in the woods of Farmingville, apparently by migrant day laborers.

Town Supervisor Brian Foley and other officials said the sites, located close to each other north of the Long Island Expressway and east of North Ocean Avenue, were full of litter and human feces, and that the men appeared to have created campfires and erected tents.

"This was a dangerous situation that had to be addressed immediately; dangerous to both the quality of life in the community of Farmingville and to the very lives of the people living in the woods," Foley said.

It was not clear how many men were living at the two sites.

Town investigators said they found two men at one site, and they were gone by the time officials came back a couple days later. At the other site they saw a group of men standing in the woods nearby but were not certain they were living there.

The sites were found and shut down late last month.

Immigrant advocates said they did not condone the men living in the woods, but that the town should have contacted church, social services or other organizations to help relocate them. Otherwise, they may simply end up in other woods, said Nadia Marin-Molina of the Workplace Project.

Foley said the town plans to implement a "protocol" to contact agencies that could assist people living in the woods the next time they find some. "It's not as if we are going to have a cold heart and simply look the other way," he said.

He said the town did not "evict" the men but rather contacted the owners of the property to inform them they were violating numerous town codes.

    Good news.
Bill O'Rielly mentioned this town a few months ago, and he said that the illegals have taken over Farmington.
