    DUH...what???!!!

Mexican trucks show better safety records than U.S. counterparts

WASHINGTON – Mexican commercial carriers that have enjoyed a little publicized right to send trucks beyond a restricted U.S. border zone in recent years have a better safety record than their U.S. counterparts, federal transportation officials said Tuesday.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration said the carriers, who number 859, had only 1.21 percent of their drivers removed from service after they failed roadside inspections between 2003 and 2006.

By comparison, the share of all U.S. truck drivers placed out of service after failing inspections – such as, for not possessing a valid driver license – was 7.06 percent for the same period.
The figures, which are part of a larger study, are significant because they provide backing for the Bush administration's contention that a controversial pilot program allowing pre-approved Mexican trucks to travel throughout the United States is safe.

“It's consistent with what we've been saying all along,â€

If true it is probably because they are allowed to go threw weigh stations because the inspectors can't speak spanish and get fustrated and tell them just to go! Police are having the same problem. Besides being warned not to harass the Mexican trucks. The news doesn't report anything on it either if you haven't noticed. "Hush-Hush" These Mexican driver seldom speak english and if they do the act dumb like they don't know what's going on. When asked a question. Besides I aslo heard that they don't actually have to have a Cdl or pass training or test. They can actually purchase a commercial license in Mexico.

You have to stop them to catch them....and there is a stand down on them...has been for the last year...So this is a straight forward pile of bull... and I assure you the drivers are NOT SAFER...I am already hearing complaints from drivers

Do you trust any numbers coming from political operatives in the Bush administration? Lets see: WMDs in Iraq, inflation is 2%, New Orleans is safe, Iran has nukes, ...

Well you think Mexican trucks are so safe, huh? My husband was hit while stopped to turn left into our street off SR 94 by a Mexican semi. 5 out of the 10 brakes on the Mexican truck were found to be not working by the CHP commercial inspector AFTER the accident that injured my husband and totaled our vehicle. The front tires had steel showing through and the insurance turned out to be fraudulent.
Can't wait for more trucks to come across the border and travel further north.... NOT!

People died to protect the sovreignty of this country and now Bush and the other elites have opened the borders to bring in an endless tide of slave-labor that will eliminate the American middle class.

Any one who thinks the Mafia franchise known as the Teamsters gives a flying darn about safety is on drugs. This is all about money. If the Mexicans came in with NO brakes at all, but joined the Teamsters, we would be hearing about how racist it is to go after them.

If this is true (I have no reason to question either way), I'd be hiring an attorney quick. The CHP has advertised they inspect *every* truck coming across the border, before being allowed on the highways.

if the chp claims to inspect every vehicle then why then all the drugs come thru undetected, and then we should sue the chp officers personally that claimed to inspected any mexican truck that causes a accident here

Let's see... has the chimp lied to the American people more than he's been truthful? I believe he has. This entire administration is rotten... it's an imbecile leading a cadre of self-serving liars.

    Sorry, don't buy it.
Article doesn't say the trucks met the states emissions standards either.
I'm happy the fundings been taken out for the pilot program.
Either put the loads on a train, or ship. More cost effective that way anyhow.

The Bush Administration has completely sold us out. Americans are under attack by their own government. We need to take to the streets and take our government back. They are supposed to be the "government OF the people" not the "government OVER the people"!

yep sounds like fair reporting to me

Example of how Bush sells his propagandized baloney!

Mexico's safety record is exploding trucks and buses sliding off 600 foot drops. How is it drivers are safer when there is no national data on them? Anyone who rides a Mexican bus needs a LARGE paid up life insurance policy (and good health-care policy).

Great post, florgal... a lot of great an innovative comments here, The main theme...corrupt data used in biased reporting and nobody believes anything the Bush administration says. One commenter had a good catch phrase...We are supposed to have a "Government OF the people" not a "Government OVER the people."

Ok, first we are told- the Mexicans are more hard working, family oriented than Americans, now their trucks are safer than Americans-whats next?

If Americans are not as "good" as Mexicans-how come WE (by the grace of God) built the worlds superpower and all Mexico has to show is corruption and third world status. If Messyhole is superior to us why are all its citizens doing their level best to come here?
