Enterovirus D68 linked to illegal immigration is behind fatal polio-like illness killing American children

A strange virus that began to spread rapidly after multiple waves of illegal immigrant children were shipped into the U.S. from Latin America last year has been shown in a new study to be directly related to the "polio-like illness" that's reportedly infected at least 112 children in 34 states, and killed nearly a dozen others.

Known as enterovirus D68, or EV-D68, the mystery virus picked up speed dramatically last fall, with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reporting that the number of new cases reported in 2014 was significantly higher than in any previous recorded year. And now, researchers from the University of California, San Francisco, (UCSF) have found the genetic signature of this enterovirus in patients diagnosed with a related illness known as acute flaccid myelitis (AFM).

After looking at every other possible factor that could have triggered AFM in the patients studied, the team verified that EV-D68 was, in fact, the cause of every case of AFM. A relatively new strain of EV-D68 known as B1, it turns out, which emerged about four years ago, was found to be the trigger of AFM, manifesting symptoms similar to the polio virus and another closely related nerve-damaging virus known as EV-D70.

For the first time, researchers also discovered EV-D68 B1 in a blood sample taken from a child with acute paralytic illness. And many others with AFM were also determined to have EV-D68 B1 in their respiratory secretions, though no EV-D68 B1 was found in any of the patients' cerebrospinal fluid. This isn't surprising, say researchers, because polio virus is generally extremely difficult to detect in cerebrospinal fluid.

"This suggests that it's not only the virus, but also patients' individual biology that determines what disease they may present with," stated Dr. Charles Chiu, M.D., Ph.D., an associate professor of laboratory medicine and director of the UCSF Abbott Viral Diagnostics and Discovery Center about the variances in where EV-D68 B1 has been discovered in patients diagnosed with AFM.

"Given that none of the children have fully recovered [from EV-D68], we urgently need to continue investigating this new strain of EV-D68 and its potential to cause acute flaccid myelitis."

Because EV-D68 wasn't found in any of the children's cerebrospinal fluid, researchers suspect that their AFM symptoms may be a result of their bodies' abnormal immune responses to the virus rather than the virus itself directly causing nerve damage. Either this or the timing of when the samples were collected, more than a week after the children began showing symptoms, made the virus appear elusive.

"The lack of detectable virus in CSF could also mean that the neurological symptoms are coming from an aberrant immune response to recent EV-D68 infection and not because the virus is directly invading neurons," added Chiu in his paper, which was published in the British journal The Lancet Infectious Diseases.

From mid-August 2014 to January 15, 2015, the CDC and various state public health laboratories confirmed more than 1,100 cases of EV-D68 in 49 states and the District of Columbia -- and almost all of these cases were in children. The CDC estimates that millions of others likely contracted mild versions of EV-D68 as well, but says these cases went unreported since most of those infected didn't get tested for the virus or receive medical treatment.

"The CDC hasn't suggested reasons for the current uptick or its origin," wrote investigative journalist Sharyl Attkisson about the mysterious, polio-like disease in a recent article referencing a study published in the Virology Journal. This study confirmed that EV-D68 was present in many of the 3,375 young, ill people from eight Latin American countries that were shipped to secret locations throughout the U.S. last year.

"Without that answer, some question whether the disease is being spread by the presence of tens of thousands of illegal immigrant children from Central America admitted to the U.S. in the past year."

Vaccine contaminants also linked to increase in EV-D68 cases

It has also been speculated that vaccines might be to blame for the sudden uptick in EV-D68 cases this past year. Though enteroviruses are quite common, with as many as 15 million people annually contracting mild forms of them, EV-D68 is unique in that it typically results in more serious complications than the more typical flu-like symptoms, including polio-like paralysis.

John P. Thomas, writing for Health Impact News, suspects that weaponized mycoplasmas in some vaccines may be causing intracellular infections inside the body that directly interfere with various aspects of cellular machinery. These disruptions include damage to cellular metabolism, energy generation and even the division of nuclear material inside the cell.

It is disgraceful that the verified news of border children taken into our country causing much illness and death to our citizens' children can only be found at a small health site. When the illnesses were being reported in the news Sept '14, not one news outlet made a connection to the border surges. It was more than coincidental. The revealing article found in a rather small "Natural News" release only recently.

You have to wonder @ the Disneyland measles epidemic also as those border children were taken everywhere. And also the possibility of measles vaccines being complicit in the spread of the disease. California is now making vaccines mandatory. I do not blame parents for being wary of them. The assault on a new born is horrendous and other countries do not require the amount that are forced on America's babies.

Vaccines make a lot of money for Big Pharma and they try and make mandatory status for big profits. They attempted to force every young girl to receive their anti-cancer HPV vaccines - totally wrong and at least we have some say against them so far. They were counting on the $$$billions profit though.

AFM: CDC identifies 31 states with 116 confirmed cases of polio-like disease

(CNN)There are now 286 cases of possible and confirmed acute flaccid myelitis in the United States this year, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

That includes 116 confirmed cases of the rare polio-like illness, also known as AFM, that leads to sudden onset of paralysis. That's 10 more confirmed cases than the agency reported a week ago. An additional 170 possible cases of AFM are under investigation.



CDC escalates response to polio-like illness AFM

Since 2014 there have been 440 confirmed cases of AFM, most of them children. More than 95% of the patients with AFM this year have been children younger than age 18. The average age of those infected is 5, according to the CDC. Most of the children with confirmed cases experienced a viral illness with symptoms including fever and cough about three to 10 days before the onset of paralysis, the CDC said this month.

The patients with confirmed AFM are in 31 states, which the CDC has now identified for the first time. There are 15 cases in Colorado, the state with the highest number, followed by Texas with 14 confirmed cases. Nineteen states have no confirmed cases, and 12 states are reporting only one confirmed case, according to the CDC.

It's not clear whether there is more of a risk of AFM in states that have a higher number of cases or if those states are just better at identifying and reporting patients. Although the CDC has encouraged doctors to report cases, there is no requirement to do so.
Most AFM patients became ill between August and October, and according to the CDC, the number of illnesses has peaked every other fall since 2014.
Even with the rise in cases, according to the CDC, "less than one to two in a million children in the United States will get AFM every year."

This year has seen a record number of cases of a mysterious paralyzing illness in children, U.S. health officials said Monday.

It's still not clear what's causing the kids to lose the ability to move their face, neck, back, arms or legs. The symptoms tend to occur about a week after the children had a fever and respiratory illness.

No one has died from the rare disease this year, but it was blamed for one death last year and it may have caused others in the past.

What's more, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials say many children have lasting paralysis. And close to half the kids diagnosed with it this year were admitted to hospital intensive care units and hooked up to machines to help them breathe.

The condition has been likened to polio, a dreaded paralyzing illness that once struck tens of thousands of U.S. children a year. Those outbreaks ended after a polio vaccine became available in the 1950s. Investigators of the current outbreak have ruled out polio, finding no evidence of that virus in recent cases.



The current mystery can be traced to 2012, when three cases of limb weakness were seen in California. The first real wave of confirmed illnesses was seen in 2014, when 120 were reported. Another, larger wave occurred in 2016, when there were 149 confirmed cases. So far this year, there have been 158 confirmed cases.

In 2015 and 2017, the counts were far lower, and it's not clear why.

The condition is called acute flaccid myelitis, or AFM. Investigators have suspected it is caused by a virus called EV-D68. The 2014 wave coincided with a lot of EV-D68 infections and the virus "remains the leading hypothesis," said Dr. Ruth Lynfield, a member of a 16-person AFM Task Force that the CDC established last month to offer advice to disease detectives.

But there is disagreement about how strong a suspect EV-D68 is. Waves of AFM and that virus haven't coincided in other years, and testing is not finding the virus in every case. CDC officials have been increasingly cautious about saying the virus triggered the illnesses in this outbreak.

Indeed, EV-D68 infections are not new in kids, and many Americans carry antibodies against it.

Why would the virus suddenly be causing these paralyzing illnesses?

"This is a key question that has confounded us," said the CDC's Dr. Nancy Messonnier, who is overseeing the agency's outbreak investigation.

Experts also said it's not clear why cases are surging in two-year cycles.



Another mystery: More than 17 countries have reported scattered AFM cases, but none have seen cyclical surges like the U.S. has.

When there has been a wave in the U.S., cases spiked in September and tailed off significantly by November. Last week, CDC officials said the problem had peaked, but they warned that the number of cases would go up as investigators evaluated — and decided whether to count — illnesses that occurred earlier.

As of Monday, there were 311 illness reports still being evaluated.

This year's confirmed cases are spread among 36 states. The states with the most are Texas, with 21, and Colorado, 15.

But it's not clear if the state tallies truly represent where illnesses have been happening. For example, the numbers in Colorado may be high at least partly because it was in the scene of an attention-grabbing 2014 outbreak, and so doctors there may be doing a better job doing things that can lead to a diagnosis.

For an illness to be counted, the diagnosis must include an MRI scan that shows lesions in the part of the spinal cord that controls muscles.
