(CBS) SAN DIEGO Federal agents arrested 18 fugitives at port-of-entry facilities in Otay Mesa and San Ysidro over the weekend, officials announced Monday.

The suspects were wanted in the United States for such crimes as manslaughter, robbery, assault, domestic violence, felony escape, possession of illegal drugs or stolen property, and probation violations, the U.S. Department of Customs and Border Protection reported.

The agency's personnel have stepped up their name checks on travelers in recent months, resulting in the capture of more wanted people using fraudulent travel documents or identity papers, according to CBP public affairs.

Apprehension of fugitives at the two San Diego-area ports of entry is up 25 percent this fiscal year, the agency reported.
