Family of guard killed in prison riot sues

JACKSON, Miss. – The family of a guard killed during a prison riot in Mississippi has filed a federal lawsuit that says inadequate staffing and poor treatment created a dangerous environment.

Correction officer Catlin Carithers was beaten to death during the May 20, 2012, riot at the privately run Adams County Correctional Facility in Natchez.

The lawsuit was filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Natchez against Nashville, Tenn.-based Corrections Corporation of America, which runs the prison.

A CCA spokesman didn't immediately respond to phone and email messages.

The lawsuit says prison officials didn't warn Carithers that he was on an inmate "hit list" and created a dangerous atmosphere "by depriving inmates of basic needs and treating them inhumanely."

The prison holds nearly 2,500 illegal immigrants convicted of crimes in the U.S.
