Shortage of farm labor causing headaches for farmers
You think 3-dollars a gallon for gas is outrageous.
How would you like to pay 20-dollars for a head of lettuce?
Some farmers say that could be a possibility.
And it could all be because of *improvements* in border security.
One farm worker says Border Patrol agents are keeping a lot of people from entering into the country and working in the fields. That's causing a shortage of labor during the harvest season.
A chile farm in Pearce Az has only 40 per cent of the workers it needs to pick the peppers.
Ed Curry grows chiles and sells the seeds all over the world. He says "t his is the worst year we've had in along time. It means an economic loss and a quality loss to us."
Curry is concerned about the growing shortage of labor. He says 90 per cent of the produce on your table is harvested by workers like these who are here illegally.
If this labor force is locked out he fears America could be dependent on foreign farmers for their food.
"Imagine trying to get our food from another country that is now our enemy we don't need that. We need our food source here."
Some growers feel one way to harvest the crops to get the food on your table at a reasonable price is to have a guest worker program.
"We need our borders tightened up no doubt about that. We also need a legalized guest workers program. T his is not a bad thing but it does have to be managed. We need laws that are reasonable that can be worked out right."
Due to the labor shortage, Curry says there's a possibility he'll be harvesting the fields until March. And that about the time he'll have to plant a new crop.
On average.... The farm workers earn 3 to 4-hundred dollars in a six-day work-week.
But once they leave the fields...they say they risk the chance of getting pulled over by Border Patrol and deported.
================================================== ===
These are just outright lies. For lettuce to cost $5 a head, workers would have to be paid $280 per hour. At $20 a head a laborer could earn at least $1, 000 per hour.

I'll pay $1.50 for a packet of seeds and pick it myself. Perhaps Everyone should start growing a Patriot Garden....It is all about supply and demand.

dman, I have about six of them. They work great just on my front porch. I grew lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers, corn and onions. I had so much that I had to give some to my neighbors. I have wild strawberries, blackberries and mint near my house as well. I may try growing them in the earthbox as well.

I think it does Bob. Do you remeber not too many years ago when web designers were getting paid more than $50.00 an hour?
