The U.S. Justice Department has asked a judge to reject a request by the Arizona Legislature to become a party in the federal government's challenge to the state's immigration enforcement law.
Justice Department lawyers tell U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton in court filings that letting the Legislature become a party would prolong the case and that state lawyers are already adequately representing the state's interests.
Last month, the conservative public interest group Judicial Watch made a court filing on behalf of the Legislature in which it asked that lawmakers be made a party to the lawsuit.
The most controversial sections of the law were put on hold by Bolton.
Gov. Jan Brewer appealed that ruling.
Brewer filed a countersuit against the federal government for failing to control the Arizona-Mexico border.
