Feds raid Quincy house, nab 11; Suspects allegedly illegal immigrants, may be deported

    By JESSICA VAN SACK
    The Patriot Ledger

QUINCY - Federal authorities raided a Quincy Center house and took into custody 11 alleged illegal immigrants who reportedly worked at the International Buffet in Quincy Point.

Quincy police said they were called to assist the FBI and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s New England office in Boston at about 6:30 a.m. Thursday. The two-story multi-family home at 14 Bigelow St. was swarmed by police that morning. Neighbors said nine men and two women were arrested.

Paula Grenier, spokeswoman for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement office, said suspects were turned over to Immigration Court and are expected to face deportation proceedings.

Grenier said she didn’t know where the suspects were being held. She declined to provide any information about the investigation or the raid.

Several neighbors said that each day shortly before 10 a.m., the residents of the Bigelow Street home would board a van that would take them to the International Buffet in President Plaza, returning at 10 p.m. or later.

Yesterday at the home, a white Ram 3500 van with ‘‘New York Super Buffet’’ painted on the side was parked in the driveway. New York Super Buffet is the company that runs the International Buffet, according to corporate filings.

On Thursday, the International Buffet put a sign on its door saying ‘‘Closed due to family illness.’’ The restaurant, which boasts a staggering array of all-you-can-eat food for $7 during lunchtime, was scheduled to reopen at 4 p.m. Friday, according to a notice posted on the door. Workers in the kitchen Friday said they had no knowledge of the bust on Bigelow Street.

At the Bigelow Street apartment on Friday afternoon, the front door remained open, and in the foyer, four doors to separate apartments had mailboxes that each listed the same names. One of the names listed, Li Feng, is that of an owner of the New York Super Buffet, state records show. Feng also owns the building, according to the city assessor’s database.

A woman driving a beige Lexus SUV stopped in front of the house Friday but denied living there even though she stopped to ask why a reporter was looking at the house.

‘‘I’m not living here,’’ she said. ‘‘I can stop any time I want.’’

A large trash bin was parked in the driveway containing empty cans of paint and other material suggesting an ongoing renovation. A mattress was propped up against the wall in the foyer.

Quincy Police Chief Robert Crowley said the Bigelow Street house is part of an ongoing investigation, but he refused to comment further. The mayor’s office did not return a call.

Earlier this month, the city license board granted permission for the International Buffet to change its management company from New York Super Buffet to China Pearl International.

The city clerk’s office said the management change had not yet occurred, and that New York Super Buffet was still running the restaurant.
