Feds: S.A. DPS Clerk Took Bribes to Give Drivers Licenses to Illegals

    Posted Friday, September 4th 2015 @ 5am

Illegal immigrants are not supposed to get drivers licenses in Texas, in fact, new laws require license applicants to show their passport, naturalization record, or other proof of citizenship, or legal status, even to get a license renewed.

But federal investigators say getting a drivers license was no problem for illegal immigrants, if 47 year old Linda Perez was on the job.

Perez was a Customer Service Representative at a San Antonio DPS office, and she has been charged with distributing licenses to illegals in exchange for bribes of between $1,000 and $2,000.

Federal investigators ay Perez would take money under the table, and then knowingly input bogus information into the DPS computer, indicating that the applicant was a U.S. citizen or legal resident.

Perez is free on $30,000 bond. She faces up to 15 years in prison.

The incident is a federal crime because Texas driver’s licenses are distributed through the U.S. Mail.

I spent a lot of time this last summer inquiring whether issuing drivers licenses to illegals could be an international treaty violation. The answer I got was that nations could issue them, and the treaty would simply be there to guarantee that there would be a way that visiting foreigners could drive here.

I still don't know if I accept that. Protocol is protocol and has its purposes, and giving privileges to foreign citizens isn't necessarily high on the list. Protection, maybe, yes----but we should have a right to know the actual identity of people who are in this country and officially issued documents from other countries are one means to verify that. Why should we give our own governmental ID to people whose identity is not actually verified? They could be wanted outlaws, just here to escape the laws of their own country. And in fact, in the present case, a lot of them probably are.

When they send people like this to prison it just adds more to taxpayer costs. 15 years plus prosecution and investigation costs. Suppose this is a million dollar crime? They should just slap these people with huge fines and put monitoring devices on them until they pay. Our country is tuning more insane every day.
