BROWNSVILLE — A North Carolina woman is charged with attempting to smuggle $1.2 million worth of heroin across the Mexican border.

Tracey Joel Hernandez, 36, was caught crossing the Veteran's International Bridge to Brownsville on April 2 with 12.6 pounds of heroin in the radiator of the car she was driving, federal prosecutors said Tuesday.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Felix Recio denied bond pending further proceedings. Hernandez faces 10 years to life in prison plus a fine of up to $10 million on each of two charges of conspiracy to possess with attempt to distribute and possession with attempt to distribute heroin.
