Feds talking to illegal immigrants in sheriff’s office probe
Phoenix Business Journal - by Mike Sunnucks

The U.S. Department of Justice's civil rights investigation into Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office’s immigration policies has included interviews with illegal immigrants, some of whom were deported and returned to the U.S.

USDOJ also is relying on a federal lawsuit, Melendres v. Arpaio, brought by the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of a Mexican national who is legally in the U.S. and claims to have been harassed and unlawfully detained by the MCSO in 2007. The USDOJ is investigating whether the sheriff’s office unfairly targets Hispanics in its raids on businesses and crime sweeps.

USDOJ’s interviews involve Hispanics who are U.S. citizens or legal immigrants as well as illegal immigrants who were arrested by the MCSO, deported and then returned to the U.S. to testify, according to sources familiar with the investigation who asked not to be identified.

USDOJ spokesman Alejandro Miyar said Aug. 28 he did not know who investigators are interviewing and Justice officials did not provide additional information as of Tuesday evening.

Arpaio said Monday he did not know who the USDOJ is talking to in the case.

The MCSO stopped cooperating with the inquiry earlier this year saying it is politically motivated. “I don’t know what they are doing,â€

There is no possibility of "unfairly targeting" a group of people when a preponderance of the evidence indicates that that particular group of people are the majority in the ranks of those who are guilty of breaking a particular law, i.e., our immigration law.

Given that well over 90% of American immigration law violators are of Hispanic descent, there can be no legitimate claim of racial profiling; therefore the claim of being victims of racial profiling, is in point of fact, “off the table.â€

What a farce !!!!!!!!! Our DOJ is going to take the word of a criminal who certainly has a vendetta against MCSO because they caught and deported him ?

Those of us who have been here for awhile know the vivid imagination IA's have when reporting their treatment by ICE and other law enforcement agencies to newspapers etc.

I just read the comments at this article site, very intelligent and ALL opposed to the DOJ.

Deported Illegal Immigrants Witnesses In Federal Probe

    Last Updated: Fri, 09/04/2009 - 3:28pm

The Department of Justice is actually bringing deported illegal aliens back to the U.S. to be witnesses in a civil rights investigation of an Arizona sheriff’s department that enforces immigration law through a federal partnership.

It’s hardly the first time that the federal agency charged with defending the nation’s interests and ensuring its safety pulls this sort of stunt. In its quest to prosecute two Border Patrol gents who intercepted a Mexican drug smuggler in 2005, the Justice Department actually went to Mexico and offered the drug dealer immunity to testify against the veteran agents.

The agents (Ignacio Ramos and Jose Campean) were subsequently convicted on charges of causing serious bodily injury, assault with a deadly weapon, discharge of a firearm and violating the drug smuggler's civil rights. The supposed victim and key witness was the Mexican illegal alien whose vehicle was intercepted with 743 pounds of U.S.-bound marijuana.

This week a Phoenix newspaper reports that the feds are at it again, using illegal immigrant violators as key witnesses in another high-profile case. It involves allegations of discrimination and unconstitutional searches and seizures on the part of the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Department and its elected leader Joe Arpaio. The feds are interviewing Hispanics who were arrested by the sheriff’s department, including those who were deported and have been brought back to the U.S. to testify.

The federal probe was requested by Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon, an open borders advocate who offers illegal aliens sanctuary in his city. In a letter to the Justice Department last spring, Mayor Gordon demanded that the agency investigate “discriminatory harassmentâ€
