Most of the Eme members that were prosecuted by colleagues were American citizens of Mexican descent. This gang did not start in Mexico but in California almost 50 years ago. The reason why they took the name Mexican Mafia was because they were harassed by other inmates for not being Caucasian or Black and were of Mexican descent.

I see...so they were simply innocent victims of those circumstances for which they found themselves and thus, created the MM in order to fight oppression and violence directed towards them.

I would say that all gangs in California prison (Eme, Black Gorilla Family, and Aryan Brotherhood) all started for the purpose of protecting one another and have evolved into very powerful organizations that control not only jails but the gangs on the outside of jail.
