SAN DIEGO -- The federal government has a new tool in their efforts to stop illegal immigration. A series of nine, 98-foot-high towers are set up along the U.S.-Mexico border in Arizona designed to create a high-tech, "virtual" border fence, NBC 7/39 reported.

The Department of Homeland Security's pilot project is called the Secure Border Initiative. The towers, built by Boeing, are equipped with sensors that are designed to help Customs and Border Patrol officers detect the difference between humans, animals and vehicles along the border.

The cameras are being used to help enforce the border, officials said, as the government hires more agents. Officers receive laptop computers for their vehicles that receive images from the towers above. Agents said the cameras capture 95 percent of border crossings, increasing their odds of catching illegal immigrants.

But some of the residents who live in border towns said they are worried about the constant eye-in-the-sky.

One man said, "We have the right to wander around and not be searched without probable cause. And this thing is constantly searching us."

If the program is a success, homeland security officials said they plan to place hundreds of the towers along the border the U.S. shares with Mexico as well as to the north in Canada.
