Female illegal immigrant dies of snake bite
Aug 14, 2006 02:41 PM EDT
A female illegal immigrant is dead after being bitten by a rattlesnake while crossing the border.
It happened Saturday about 25 miles northeast of Lukeville in the Organ Pipe National Monument.
Border Patrol says the victim's husband activated a beacon to get help.
Authorities say this brings the death toll to 141 since October.
They also say this is the first time in recent memory that agents found an illegal immigrant who died from an animal bite.

I would think there would be more snake bites considering the desert terrain along the border. I would imagine there's quite allot of scorpion bites along w/ the snake bites.

..this is pathetic..our most efficient border security plan ...is snakes & scorpions...but maybe it's time to get old school, and go low-tech

40-year-old woman dies crossing border
ARIZONA DAILY STAR
A 40-year-old illegal entrant who was crossing the desert from Mexico with her husband died Saturday southwest of Tucson, officials said Monday.
Authorities are now trying to determine if the woman died from heat exposure or as a result of a snake bite - a rare occurrence, said Gustavo Soto, a Tucson sector Border Patrol spokesman.
Border Patrol agents responded about 5 p.m. Saturday to a rescue beacon that had been activated near Ajo, Soto said. The husband, 40, told agents he had left his wife behind at a location that was about two hours away after she was bitten by a snake on her arm.
Additional Border Patrol agents, along with BORSTAR, was dispatched and approximately two hours later, they found the woman’s body.
“This is the first incident in the last several years where a person’s death could possibly be attributed to a snake bite,” Soto said.
There are 20 rescue beacons set up in the Tucson sector that are 25 to 30 feet tall, Soto said. The beacons have a flashing light on top that can be seen for miles at night and during the day there is a reflector.
The beacons are activated by pressing a large red button, at which time Border Patrol agents will respond, he said.
