Fight against Mexican drug cartels to get more muscle

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration may shift tens of millions of dollars for enforcing workplace immigration laws to fighting Mexican drug cartels.

An official familiar with the plan said the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency is considering asking Congress for approval to take more than $30 million from a program to investigate employers complicit in hiring illegal immigrants.

If Congress agreed, the money would be used to fight cartel-related violence.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the request has not yet been made to Congress.

ICE is also considering send more than 90 more officers to the border, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is hiring 37 people to target gunrunners.
The deployments are part of President Barack Obama's first moves to boost federal security sources on the U.S. side of the border.

The additional immigration agents would double the size of an ongoing ICE task force that has been working with other federal agencies to fight the criminal organizations contributing to the border violence.

The ATF agents will be added to anti-gunrunning teams in McAllen, Texas, El Centro, Calif., and Las Cruces, N.M., as well as to U.S. consulates in Juarez and Tijuana. Some of the reinforcement costs will be covered with economic recovery money recently approved by Congress.

The U.S.-Mexico border has been a different problem for Obama than it was for his predecessor, George W. Bush. While Bush sent National Guard troops to stem the flow of illegal immigrants, Obama's first moves are designed more to keep violence from spilling across the border.

Katherine Cesinger, a spokeswoman for Texas Gov. Rick Perry, said the governor's office has "not received official word from Washington but we are hopeful we'll get the help we need from Washington to secure the border."

Mexican officials say the violence spawned by warring drug cartels killed 6,290 people last year and more than 1,000 so far this year, mostly south of the border.

Over the weekend hundreds of Mexican army troops arrived in Juarez, a border city across the Rio Grande River from El Paso, Texas. Police in Juarez have been swamped by drug violence. The move brought the total number of soldiers patrolling the city to around 7,000.

Warring drug cartels are blamed for more than 560 kidnappings in Phoenix in 2007 and the first half of 2008, as well as killings in Atlanta, Birmingham, Ala., and Vancouver, British Columbia.

The drug cartels make most of their money importing drugs and illegal aliens.

If you move funds away from workplace enforcement of immigration laws you help the cartels and their illegal foot soldiers out!

Obama is going to help the cartels with one hand while claiming to oppose them with another.

Who can disagree with this. But it's only after you read the details in the article and know the context and history of Obama's pro-illegal stances, we can see what (at least from the details we know now) is really going on here -- an apparent attempt to gut immigration enforcement.

Of course, most people will not know this -- which is exactly what Obama wants.

This is Obama's way of "securing the border first" Then they will justify passing the subsequent Amnesty.

Robbing Peter to pay Paul. He shouldn't be allocating money away from enforceing immigration laws. The drug cartel problem is a seperate issue and needs to be funded seperately.

What a bunch of BS! There is no difference in the amount of illegal immigrants or violence that has been coming over the border. If anything the numbers are higher because Mexicans think that Obama is going to give them all amnesty and they are coming here faster than our border agents can control. WE NEED THE MILITARY ON THE BORDERS, NOT A REDUCTION OF WORKPLACE ENFORCEMENT. Why take away programs that work?
