Firms plead guilty in immigrant case

The attorney for 12 Missouri-based firms that provided janitorial services to Wal-Mart Stores Inc. using illegal immigrants entered guilty pleas on behalf of the firms yesterday in U.S. Middle District Court at Harrisburg.

Under a corporate plea agreement, the cleaning companies will pay $4 million.

Attorney Jeffrey Demereth entered the pleas before Judge Yvette Kane on behalf of IMC Associates and 11 related companies to conspiracy to transport and encourage illegal aliens to reside in the United States. Christopher S. Walters is the sole shareholder in all of the companies.

The cleaning companies agreed to forfeit $4 million as part of a larger deal with Wal-Mart, which already has agreed to forfeit $11 million. The settlement also requires Wal-Mart to better monitor contractors for compliance with immigration laws.

Wal-Mart became the target of a criminal investigation by a federal grand jury in Williamsport after the 1998 arrest of an illegal immigrant from Russia who worked for one of the firms. The probe included surveillance of Wal-Mart stores in the Harrisburg, Lebanon, York and Chambersburg areas and eventually involved stores in 21 states.

The agreement was announced last month.

If a high society member embezzles millions he more than likely will not see prison time.The patriarch of the Kennedy clan did more insider trading than probably anyone else in history which greatly contributed to the stock market crash and the suicides and hard lives that followed-most people don't even know this and he was never indicted.Martha Stewart's case-a joke.If she'd really been punished she'd have came out as Marty Stewart.And then there's Ms.Ryder;many people across America are doing the rest of their lives using up tax payers money in prison over the very same crime due to our 3rd strike law,sometimes less of the same time,and yet nothing for her.The guys that ran Enron-we all know the story-compare any of their punishments with your average guy that embezzles say,$600,while he's managing a burger joint.The little guy is going to the pen.Justice is blind yes-but in some cases retarded too.
