Five people — three of whom activists said are living in the country illegally — were arrested after immigration protests forced the closure of a major downtown Denver intersection on Tuesday.

The arrests happened about noon at Broadway and Colfax Avenue, near the Colorado Capitol building, where some 75 people with signs and bullhorns gathered to urge Sen. Michael Bennet to demand President Barack Obama stop the deportation of immigrants living in the United States illegally. Those arrested refused repeated police demands to clear the roadway.

Roughly a dozen Colorado immigration groups were represented in the protest, which included speeches from movement organizers.

"We are calling on Sen. Bennet to act now," said Sonia Marquez of the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition.

Marquez said the group decided to protest at the Capitol because of its political symbolism, adding that immigrants and activists are angry that Bennet promised to stand up for immigrants rights and then didn't keep that promise.

Protesters chanted, "Bennet, what happened? You took us all for granted."

"This is the beginning of a long fight and we're not giving up," said Felipe Sausa-Rodriguez of United We Dream.

"Bennet is committed to fixing our broken immigration system," the Democratic senator's office said in a statement. "Our current system threatens our families, our safety, and our economy. He has called on the president to take executive action within his authority to fix the system. Our immigration leaders and advocates who have fought for change for years are rightfully frustrated by Washington inaction and the House of Representatives' refusal to act."

Denver police said it had heard about the protests in advance and had about two dozen officers readied for the activism.

"I have no words," said Oscar Juarez, of Longmont, who said he is living in the country illegally. "It's powerful, inspiring. I'm still just in shock (from) seeing them taken away in the back of a truck."

Illegals are always getting arrested at their protests because they know the Obama admin will protect them.

Americans are almost never arrested at our anti illegal immigration protests because 1. We are law abiding American Defenders and 2. Obama would probably slap us with hate crime charges and put us in jail for decades over minor infractions.
