PHOENIX (AP) — Gov. Jan Brewer has asked a judge to keep alive her lawsuit that accuses the federal government of failing to secure the border and enforce immigration laws.
The governor's lawyers asked U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton to deny a request by the U.S. Justice Department to dismiss the lawsuit.
Her attorneys say the lawsuit is needed to help bring relief to Arizona from the burdens of being a busy illegal entry point into the country.
Brewer filed the action as a counter-lawsuit to the Justice Department's attempt to invalidate Arizona's immigration enforcement law.
The Justice Department says Brewer's counter-lawsuit raises questions of a political nature and that Bolton's court wasn't the right place to air Brewer's grievances.
