MIAMI -- A South Florida man and woman have been arrested on charges of human smuggling after their boat carrying 31 illegal immigrants was intercepted by U.S. Coast Guard crews.

Jesus Saavedra-Reyes and Sandra Anderson were arrested Tuesday and appeared in U.S. District Court in West Palm Beach on Wednesday. They are being held in pretrial detention.

According to a federal complaint, authorities intercepted the boat Monday east of Boynton Beach. There were 19 illegal immigrants from Haiti, six from Brazil, four from Jamaica and two from Sri Lanka onboard.

The Haitians were returned to Haiti and the others have been processed for deportation.

The immigrants told agents they were expected to pay a $5,000 smuggling fee.
