ACLU demands authorities limit detention
MIAMI -- The American Civil Liberties Union is calling on more than 350 Florida law enforcement agencies to stop detaining suspected illegal immigrants who are not charged with crimes.
Tampa ACLU attorney Glenn Katon said Friday that about half a dozen Florida law enforcement agencies are authorized to detain such individuals. Those agencies are part of a national program that deputizes officers to act as immigration officials. The rest obtain detention request forms from federal authorities to hold individuals for up to four days while their immigration status is investigated.
The ACLU says the form is unconstitutional. It warns local agencies could be held liable for depriving people of liberty without due process.
