Couple gets prison for $55 million human smuggling ring

A federal judge sentenced a Brazilian couple to prison for their role in operating a labor staffing company that made millions by forging visas for illegal aliens.

An Orlando judge sentenced Valeria Barbugli, 57, to two years in prison, and her husband, Wilson Barbugli, 63, to 18 months, on charges of conspiracy, visa fraud and alien smuggling, according to a U.S. Attorney’s Office press release.

Authorities say the Barbuglis made $55 million operating the staffing company which contracted with hotels for labor. The Barbuglis workforce consisted of illegal aliens for which the couple forged work visas, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

In addition to the prison terms, a $55 million judgement was levied against the couple. The Barbuglis are both Brazilian citizens and will be deported after serving their sentences, according to federal authorities.
