Immokalee students celebrate Mexican Independence Day

Students of Immokalee Community School, a charter school run by Redlands Christian Migrant Association, or RCMA, in Immokalee, are celebrating Mexico’s Independence Day today at school.

Smiling, students rotated through four different stations learning about Mexico’s war for independence from Spain on Sept. 16.

The day's celebration included learning about Mexico’s history, making "papel picado," to making piñatas and learning some Mexican cultural dancing.

"I think, especially with our population, it’s important that they learn about our culture and history," Principal Pete Cade said
