Federal judge signs order to release Egyptian man

MIAMI — A Miami immigration judge signed an order Friday to release an Egyptian man acquitted earlier this year of terrorism-related charges.

The order, containing the terms of an agreement between immigration officials and Youssef Megahed's attorney, comes after Immigration Judge Kenneth Hurewitz threw out Megahed's deportation case earlier Friday.

"I feel this was a nightmare, and we woke up from this nightmare," said Samir Megahed, his father.

Megahed was expected to be released later Friday afternoon.

"We're ecstatic," his attorney Charles Kuck said. "This is more than we could hope for."

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested Megahed in April, days after a jury found him not guilty on federal explosives charges. He and a fellow University of South Florida student in 2007 had homemade model rocket parts in the trunk of their car while traveling near a military base in rural South Carolina. Authorities said the materials looked like pipe bombs.
