Harsh US immigration rules force Microsoft to open shop in Canada

    1 hour, 30 minutes ago

US software behemoth Microsoft Corp. said Thursday it would soon open an office in Canada, lamenting tough immigration rules in the United States that make it difficult to hire foreign staff.

"It is about recruiting the best and brightest, and right now, the majority are coming from overseas," Marc Seaman, a spokesman for the world's biggest software company, told The Globe and Mail newspaper.

"The United States has immigration quotas and some limitations for bringing in people from outside the country," he said. "That challenge is an opportunity for Canada, in the sense that this will bring the top software developers to Canada."

The development office, to be opened in Vancouver, a three-hour drive north from Microsoft's Redmond, Washington headquarters, will initially be staffed by some 300 recruits from around the world, the company said.

Eventually, it could grow to house as many as 1,000 employees.

Canada is currently the third-largest source of recruits for Microsoft outside the United States, after India and Japan

Well, lets just see if there are any terrorists in that group like Scotland and England. Microsoft may regret it, if something like that happens out of their business.

Bill Gates has been pushing very hard for amnesty and an increase in his ability to import highly skilled people he helped pay to educate in other countries with cash awards etc.

Those coming into the U.S to work for him are not held to the same restrictions Americans are regarding hours per week. over time and a number of other factors that make employing them preferable over American Citizens.

Do a search of his stand on Google and you will find a wealth of news articles regarding Bill Gates stand on immigration , hand shakes with Kennedy etc.

I guess Bill Gates must have decided he would rather throw open the southern border then lose such a great opportunity to line his pockets with cheaper labor.

Poor guy. It's tough being number two in so many ways!

This article leaves out a very salient point. Canada does not do
chain immigration. They don't let in a bunch of low skilled people
who don't know English, i.e. they have a points system. So this
is a win/win for Canada. More hi-tech jobs & immigrants who are
    already trained.

The vast majority of H1Bs are of the lowest skill level so he can't claim he's recruiting the most highly skilled. And it's been shown time and again that H1Bs are paid less - on average $13K less than citizens. H1Bs are cheap foreign labor brought in to drive wages down. Bill Gates is a liar and a cry baby - let him take his toys elsewhere.

    Back pedal?

Microsoft mouth piece Lou Gellos says immigration had nothing to do with the choice to build in Canada. They would have built there anyway.

I guess it just must have been a soap box opportunity they had to take.

The U.S. only has immigration quotas for legal immigration. The sky's the limit for illegal immigration though. Hey Mr. Gates! Ya need a toilet cleaner or dish washer for your company? Cause we got plenty, and I can tell you where to find them.
Calderon was absolutely right when he said...."Where there is a Mexican, there is Mexico".

Winblows has been a piece of crap since day one & 10 years behind
real operating systems until the last few years. But the best solutions
usually don't survive the market for whatever reason.

I'm running Linux on my new deskside dell. Works great for email &
browsing & I have it DMZ'ed so my friends can come in via http & ssh.
It also runs a lot faster with linux than Winblows.
