Neb. Lawmaker 'Saddened' by Immigration Law Delay
Fremont, Neb.

A Nebraska state lawmaker from Fremont says he is "saddened and upset" that the city's ban on hiring and renting to illegal immigrants has been suspended.

The Fremont City Council voted earlier this week to delay enacting the voter-approved ban as it defends the ordinance from lawsuits filed by two civil rights organizations.

State Sen. Charlie Janssen, a Republican in the officially nonpartisan Legislature, says that while the delay is frustrating for ordinance supporters, it was necessary so that authorities can be certain the ban is legally enforceable and implement it properly.

Janssen has said he plans to introduce a bill in the Nebraska Legislature next year similar to Arizona's divisive immigration law. A ruling Wednesday by a federal judge put on hold parts of that law.
