Report calls for Collier deputies to cease immigration enforcement

A national report released today calls for the end to a program that gives local law agencies immigration enforcement powers, arguing that Latino population growth has fueled its rise rather than high crime rates.

The Collier County Sheriff’s Office was among the first agencies in the nation in the program in which deputies perform functions of Immigration and Customs and Enforcement.

The unit ferrets out illegal immigrants booked in jail and does historical research on individuals. Since the unit began in October 2007 and through ‘08, deputies had processed 1,080 illegal immigrants. On average, those picked up through investigations had three prior felonies, data showed.

Why don't they add a personal living to this list? 10 illegals being aided and abetted in one house is breaking many laws.

A local immigration attorney concurred with the recommendation to dissolve the units...

Why didn't they print his/her name? I'm sure they want it dissolved because they are deporting their repeat offending customers. With immigration attorneys, it's never about the illegal aliens, it's always about self-preservation by collecting fees from illegal aleins. Get rid of the illegal aliens and they go out of business.

In my area, high Latino population growth is the equivalent of high levels of illegal immigrants. High illegal population = high crime rate. Just being here is a crime.

Lee Co. Sheriff Scott is well liked but I do not believe he calls ICE when he comes across an IA.

The Lee Co. sheriff's website lists the arrest records and pics,a large percentage are Hispanic.

Lehigh Acres has a large Hispanic population now with a lot of IA's and also a very high crime rate.Drug bust and home invasions have exploded in Lehigh.
