POMPANO BEACH - Ten Haitian immigrants are in custody this morning after coming ashore in Pompano Beach overnight, Border Patrol agents report.

They came ashore near the public beach at Southeast Fourth Street and Briny Avenue on a 24-foot single engine boat, said Elee Erice, the border patrol's Miami sector spokeswoman.

The immigrants, which included eight men and two women, all appeared to be in good health and surrendered peacefully, officials said.

One witness said that as many as 16 people may have been on the boat, Erice said. Patrol officials said that they would be looking into those reports.

The 10 are being questioned at the Dania Beach Border Patrol Station and likely will be deported, officials said.
