TALLAHASSEE, Florida -- A push is underway to allow undocumented immigrants the right to a driver's license.

The Florida Immigrant Coalition is one of several groups calling on lawmakers to allow undocumented immigrants on the road.

FLIC says it would lower insurance costs for drivers and boost the economy as more cars are sold.

Eleven other states, plus Washington, D.C., currently allow undocumented immigrants to apply for licenses.

It's estimated that more than 900,000 people without immigration status live in Florida. Juan Escalante, an undocumented FSU student, says his parents are two of the many who aren't allowed to drive.

During the last legislative session, he helped lobby for in-state tuition at state universities to be extended to undocumented students. Now, he's hoping to help push through the ability to attain driver's licenses.

"We already accomplished such a monumental victory last session that this is just the next natural step in order to ensure that our community continues drive to progress," he said.

Attempts to pass laws allowing undocumented immigrants to apply for driver's licenses have failed the past few years.
