BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. —A suspected migrant was killed and at least 17 other migrants were captured during an overnight landing on Hillsboro Beach.

US Border Patrol said the incident was likely the result of a human smuggling operation out of the Bahamas.

It's unclear how the suspected migrant died.

Agents said the Coast Guard captured two migrants who were still in the water, likely told to jump overboard from a boat when they approached the shore.

The rest were captured on land.

Officials said the migrants are Haitian and are now being questioned.

Local police assisted in the overnight search that expanded north into Boca Raton.
