FROM STNG WIRE REPORTS
City health officials are investigating reports of salmonella poisoning believed to be linked to a booth at last week’s Taste of Chicago festival.
The Chicago Department of Public Health has confirmed investigating 17 cases of illness believed to be associated with the Pars Cove Persian Cuisine booth at the Taste, five of which have been confirmed as cases of illness caused by salmonella bacteria, according to a release from CDPH. Several of those sought treatment from a doctor or hospital emergency room, and at least three were admitted to hospitals, the release said.

The salmonellis situation represents the first confirmed outbreak of the food-borne illness associated with the Taste of Chicago in at least 20 years, the release said.

Nationally, there are about 40,000 cases reported every year, with about 300 in Chicago. Federal health officials say the actual number could be 30 times higher because most cases are mild and go unreported, according to the release.

CDPH sanitarians have also inspected the Pars Cove restaurant at the 430 block of West Diversey, interviewed staff and tested employees for the bacteria, the release said.

“While most salmonellis is very common and most people recover on their own with no need for treatment, we’re not taking any chances with this situation,â€
