An Iranian convicted of bank robbery is one of hundreds of foreign criminals who may never be deported because their home countries won’t take them back, police say.
Mehdi Karimi-Arshad, 50, who has racked up 23 convictions since 1992, has been on an immigration hold since September 2004, as officials of the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) try to deport him.
Karimi-Arshad came to Canada in 1989 and was granted refugee status, according to the Federal Court of Canada.
Court documents show his record includes an August 2001 conviction for bank robbery with the use of an imitation firearm. He also has convictions for failure to attend court, failure to comply with a probation order and theft under $5,000.
