State senate District 9 GOP hopefuls like Arizona's immigration law

HUNTSVILLE, AL - All four Republican candidates for South Huntsville's state Senate seat support an illegal immigration law like the one approved this year in Arizona, a citizens' group heard here Monday night.

"What we have to do is scare them," Clay Scofield told South Huntsville Civic Association forum, referring to illegal immigrants.

Arizona's new law requires state and local police to ask proof of residency from any person they encounter during normal law enforcement and suspect of being in the country illegally.

Agreeing they would vote for such a law for Alabama were Scofield, a Marshall County farmer, Albertville certified public accountant Tony Cochran, and Albertville developer Don Spurlin.

Retired Army officer and defense industry worker John Wilson was not present but sent word he agrees with Arizona's law, too. Wilson was in New York at his son's graduation from West Point.

The three candidates present - Scofield, Cochran and Spurlin - agreed on most issues as they spoke to about 100 civic association members at Grissom High School, including:
