Four illegal aliens detained after swimming ashore in Imperial Beach CA.
Four suspected undocumented immigrants detained after swimming ashore in Imperial Beach
Alex Riggins Contact Reporter
Border Patrol agents detained a quartet of Mexican citizens suspected of being unautho immigrants who were allegedly dropped by boat off the coast of Imperial Beach and swam ashore Monday morning, authorities said.
The agency began receiving numerous calls around 7:35 a.m. regarding four people in wetsuits swimming toward shore near the Imperial Beach Pier, Border Patrol public-affairs Agent Eduardo Olmos said.
The agents learned later that the group consisted of three men and one woman, all of whom were Mexican nationals suspected of entering the U.S. without documentation.
Initial reports suggested there might have been as many as eight people trying to come ashore, Olmos said. But after agents searched the area, they determined that multiple calls about the group of people spotted off shore had created confusion about the number of people the agents were looking for.
Imperial Beach resident Karen Ritchie was headed out the back of Katy’s Cafe to drink her morning coffee on the benches looking toward the ocean when she noticed three barefooted men who seemed out of place, she said.
One of them took a phone call, answering and speaking in Spanish, Ritchie said, but she “didn’t connect the dots” that the men might have been unauthorized immigrants until lifeguards showed up a few minutes later “aggressively looking for someone.”
“Then the (Border Patrol) showed up and the helicopter was going around in circles,” Ritchie said. “There were no announcements or descriptions being given — I felt like they were trying to keep it hush-hush — but they were aggressively looking.”
It wasn’t immediately clear how Border Patrol agents tracked down the group, but all four people were eventually apprehended, Olmos said.
Footage from OnScene TV showed agents pat-searching four suspects dressed in beachwear, including wetsuits, board shorts and rash guards. Agents ushered them into the back of a Border Patrol SUV, allowing them to climb in themselves without handcuffs.
The vessel that dropped them in the water was believed to have headed south and crossed into Mexican waters, Olmos said.
