The press conference is at 12:30 p.m. at the Frederick County Law Enforcement Center, 110 Airport Drive East, Frederick.
Frederick County Sheriff Chuck Jenkins (R) is expected to announce that deputies and officers will begin a four-week training course with the Manassas Police Department, Manassas Park Police Department, Prince William County Sheriff’s Office and Prince William Police Department.

The training is part of a program administrated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a branch of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Jenkins has been meeting with bureau officials since September in attempts to become accepted into the federal Criminal Alien Program.

Under the program, deputies would receive training from the bureau to determine if individuals they arrest are in the country legally. If they are found to be here illegally, deputies can begin deporting them.

Deputies Learn To Identify Illegal Immigrants During Training

    UPDATED: 7:22 pm EST February 4, 2008

FREDERICK COUNTY, Md. -- Frederick County sheriff's deputies began a training course on Monday designed to help them better identify and process criminal illegal immigrants, but some said they are worried legal immigrants will be targeted, too.

The training, run by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, will last one month.

After the training is complete, the county will be linked to a federal database designed to help authorities verify suspected criminals' legal status.

Frederick is the first county in Maryland to participate in the program. More than 30 law enforcement agencies are already participating nationwide, which has resulted in more than 40,000 possible immigration violations in the last two years.

The sheriff's department said it won't actively seek out illegal immigrants but instead will try to identify the status of people who have already committed crimes.

"They are in drug trafficking. They are in gun trafficking. They are in violent street crime. We're not talking about just pulling people over for driving without a license," said Frederick County Sheriff Chuck Jenkins.

The county said it would like to deport criminals found to be in the country illegally.

Some worry, however, that law-abiding immigrants will be targeted, too. There are nearly 20,000 immigrants in Frederick.

"I guess the government has to do their job, but they are really scared right now," said business owner Oscar Lazo.

"We have a lot of people that are law-abiding that may be caught in the system," said Guy Djoken of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

"This is about the criminal alien population. It's not about being an illegal immigrant. It's about being a criminal, committing crimes while you're illegally in this country," Jenkins said.

    Great news!

I'd just read that 38 officers from around the country completed training this month. Looks like Jim Pendergraph is just what ICE needed.
