FTAA Is Dead, Says Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez
Havana, Oct 31 (AIN) Venezuela will raise the flags of the Bolivarian Revolution at the fourth Summit of the Americas as it demonstrates its opposition to those who seek to revive the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) agreement, said Venezuela's president Hugo Chavez.
Speaking on his regularly broadcast radio program and television program on Sunday, Chavez described the pact as an imperialist, colonialist and hegemonic scheme of the United States.
The FTAA is dead, the peoples of Latin America are burying it, stated the Venezuelan leader, who stressed the importance of the unity of Latin American workers in the struggle for building a "one single great nation" across the region, reported Granma newspaper.
While speaking with people participating in the First Latin American Conference of Companies Taken Over by Workers, during a broadcast of his program "Hello President," Chavez said that a new era is being born. "This is a high point that we are beginning to experience in the region; if people remain united they will overcome," he stressed. "This is the ALBA (the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas), which is already alive and functioning," President Chavez said. He noted that 200 years since Bolivar's birth, there is a greater consciousness among the peoples of the continent, adding that what the early liberators of Latin America dreamed of is now in progress.
The Venezuelan head of state inaugurated on Sunday a university campus at Maturin, in the state of Monagas. This will have national and international significance by being the leading institution offering coursework to the entire population and assuming the task of transforming higher education overall.
The facility can accommodate 9,000 students and envisages academic programs related to the Mission Sucre (a program of higher education for the poor) and other programs benefiting the community.
The new Bolivarian University is an inclusive effort where knowledge is the permanent mechanism with which to build up society, because education liberates people and leads them towards progress, said Chavez, who visited the different areas of the teaching center where he met with students, professors and other workers.
During his speech, Chavez also referred to the electoral campaigns of this coming December 4, which have officially begun for parliamentary elections. Chavez was confident of mass participation, saying that "on that day we will write one more page in history."
The president announced wage increases for doctors working in the public sector, a decision that will involve the payment of an additional 571 billion Bolivars.
He also reported during the program that, beginning October 31, the Telesur television program will be on the air broadcasting from Caracas, the capital.I stay current on Americans for Legal Immigration PAC's fight to Secure Our Border and Send Illegals Home via E-mail Alerts (CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP)

Well, I sure hope he's successful in defeating the FTAA.
Sounds like he's trying to do things for his people. Why would that put him on our hit list?

Well, remember, it was PAT ROBERTSON who had him on the HIT LIST! That should explain it all!
It does sound like he's got enough sense to see that the FTAA will not help his people. I wish some of OUR politicians would wake up to that fact too."POWER TENDS TO CORRUPT AND ABSOLUTE POWER CORRUPTS ABSOLUTELY." Sir John Dalberg-Acton

That's true, jp. He has always said that his problem is NOT with the American people and, as you know, I agree completely with him that the LEADER of OUR country is a DICTATOR.
