Kidnapping Fugitive with $1 Million Bail Caught at San Ysidro Port

San Diego - A 33-year-old Rialto, Calif., man wanted by the San Bernardino authorities for kidnapping was apprehended by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the San Ysidro port of entry yesterday morning.

The man is charged with kidnapping, taking a child without consent, and threats to commit a crime, all felonies, according to a $1 million bail warrant issued out of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office.

On Wednesday morning, at about 8:30 a.m., Gregory Mata was caught entering the United States as a pedestrian through the San Ysidro border station after he presented officers with his valid California Driver License, U.S. birth certificate and declared himself to be a citizen of the United States. CBP officers ran his name against law enforcement databases revealing he was wanted.

Mata was taken into custody and escorted into the secondary area for further processing. Officers conducted a ten-print query of his fingers utilizing the Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System confirming his identity and that he was the subject of the outstanding warrant.

Mata was transported and booked into the San Diego County Jail.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
