Fugitives stopped at border by Eagle Pass CBP agents

Fugitives stopped at border by Eagle Pass CBP agents
    SPECIAL TO THE TIMES
    09/16/2007

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers arrested several fugitives as they tried to cross the border at Eagle Pass last week.On Sept. 13, CBP officers intercepted Sergio Carlos Rodriguez Treviño, 28, a Mexican citizen from Piedras Negras, when he approached Bridge I and claimed to have lost his laser visa.

CBP officers determined Rodriguez Treviño had an outstanding arrest warrant and turned him over to the FBI.

Meanwhile, on Sept. 12, CBP officers referred vehicle passenger Elizabeth Lee Hernandez Rebollero, 24, a Mexican citizen, for a secondary examination. Hernandez Rebollero claimed to be a U.S. citizen but presented someone else's U.S. birth certificate, according to officers at the scene.

At the secondary exam, CBP officers determined she was a Mexican citizen with prior apprehensions for violations of immigration law and for assault causing bodily injury. CBP officers processed her for expedited removal with prosecution and transported her for detention pending a hearing before a U.S. magistrate. The vehicle was seized.

Also on Sept. 12, CBP officers at Bridge I referred pedestrian Richard Steve Cardenas, 45, a U.S. citizen from San Antonio, for a secondary examination.

CBP officers discovered that Cardenas had a possible outstanding arrest warrant for child neglect from Brewster, confirmed the warrant and turned him over to the custody of Eagle Pass police officers.

Eagle Pass does not just catch an release, they hold them and prosecute them for illegal entry.

It's called Operation Streamline. Illegal immigrants are arrested and charged with misdemeanor illegal entry under the program. They are tried in federal court and jailed for up to 180 days pending deportation to their country of origin.

This has been a very successful program. Captures per day have gone from 150 to 10 in the region.

It is nice to see them catch these people early on. Many times they get them later after they commit a crime. Today ICE is doing just that as the police dispatcher has dispatched officers for back up for the ICE agents who are serving a warrant. This dispatch went out about 10 to 15 minutes ago. I hope to learn more about it and pass the information on.
